The Lexington Standard was founded by William Decker (W.D.) Johnson in 1892. The four-page weekly is today regarded as one of the most notable African-American newspapers in the country, although only a handful of issues are known to have survived. Johnson used the paper to assert his views on African American life, civil rights, and religious awareness but, after just five years, in 1897, he sold the paper to Robert Charles O’Hara (R.C.O.) Benjamin.
A native of St. Kitts Island in the West Indies, Benjamin came to America and quickly established himself as a well-known lawyer, author, and, journalist. Before coming to the Lexington Standard, he wrote for, edited, or owned more than 11 African American newspapers and worked for a variety of other newspapers around the country, the Daily Sun--a white-owned paper in Los Angeles and New York’s Progressive American among them.
Benjamin was an outspoken critic of American segregation and Jim Crow laws, and he had a strong interest in politics. The Standard was a perfect fit for him. To be sure, Benjamin had aroused concern from both whites and blacks alike well before coming to the Standard. He was at once criticized and beloved for his frankness, as it was extreme for the period. Benjamin’s aggressive and confrontational tactics had forced him to flee several locales, but he would never leave Lexington. On October 2, 1900, Benjamin got into an argument with a white precinct worker, Michael Moynihan, over voter registration for local African American citizens. That same evening, Moynihan killed Benjamin on a Lexington street. Claiming self-defense, Moynihan was acquitted of the murder, even though he had shot Benjamin in the back more than six times.
After Benjamin’s death, editors came and went, but the Lexington Standard never again enjoyed its former popularity. In 1908, W.D. Johnson returned to the paper hoping to reverse its decline. The difficulties continued, prompting Johnson to sell the Standard in 1912 to three local men: Rev. A.W. Davis, former pastor of Lexington’s Constitution Street Christian Church, who became editor; Prof. D. L. Reid, who served as secretary; and Ed Willis, the superintendent of the famed Patchen Wilkes thoroughbred stock farm, who acted as treasurer. The new management changed the name of the paper to the Lexington Weekly News “on account of financial and other troubles of The Standard,” and the first issue appeared on March 15, 1912.
Despite these changes, the paper’s misfortunes continued. By May 31, Willis announced that he had bought out Davis and Reid owing to “bad management.” Willis implored the African American community in the Bluegrass region to support the Weekly News through subscriptions and advertisements. Willis also urged readers to be mindful of the coming presidential election in which he openly supported William Howard Taft’s Republican ticket. Like its predecessor, only three issues of the Lexington Weekly News are known to have survived, all from 1912. It is unclear precisely when publication ceased or why.

The Lincoln=Grant Herald newspaper was published monthly by the students and alumni of Lincoln Grant High School in Covington, Kentucky.
In 1909, the city of Latonia, Kentucky was annexed to Covington and the Lincoln Colored School in Latonia was merged with the 7th Street Colored School in Covington, and the combined school was named Lincoln-Grant School, while the high school kept the name William Grant. The number of school age children increased to 44 high school students and 360 students in the elementary grades. In 1914, the night high school was established in Covington for students who had completed 8th grade and were at least 14 years old. In the colored night school, students were taught basic English and arithmetic. By 1924, within the colored day school, there were 519 students with a teaching faculty of 4 high school teachers and 18 elementary teachers. The number of students would outgrown the size of the building, and in 1928, a bond was issued and passed with $250,000 approved for the building of a new colored school on Greenup Street, to be completed by September of 1930. The school was completed in 1932.
The Lincoln=Grant herald began in 1913, but it is unclear how long the publication lasted.

The American Baptist was established in Louisville in 1879 and was the successor to the state’s first African-American Baptist publication, the Baptist Herald and the official newspaper of the General Association of Kentucky Baptists.
The Herald’s founder and a leader of the General Association of Colored Baptists, Rev. George W. Dupee, was a former slave from Gallatin County who bought his freedom and moved to Paducah where he established the newspaper in September 1873. Kentucky’s African-American Baptist churches were booming after the Civil War, creating opportunities for aspiring religious journalists. After five years, Dupee sold the Herald to William H. Steward, then secretary of the Association. Later that year, the paper re-emerged from Steward’s office in Louisville as the American Baptist. It is still in print today, making it one of Kentucky’s oldest continuously published newspapers.
Like Dupee, Steward was an energetic community leader. Three years before establishing the Baptist, he became Louisville’s first African American postman. Steward was a vocal opponent of racial segregation and in 1914 helped found the Louisville chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Steward also served as president of the Afro-American Press Association. After more than 50 years at the helm of the Baptist, he died in 1935.
Under Steward’s leadership, the American Baptist continued the Herald’s in-depth coverage of the Christian religion and activities in the state’s growing African American churches. The Baptist also covered developments in African American education as well. Of particular import was news from various African American and Baptist schools such as State University, often referred to as “our university.” Baptist Bible schools, known as New Era Institutes, also regularly reported on their efforts to train new ministers. Working with Steward on American Baptist was William James Simmons, the president of State University, the only institution of higher education in Kentucky controlled and established by African Americans. Simmons was also an organizer and subsequently the president of the American National Baptist Convention, later renamed the National Baptist Convention of the U.S.A. The American Baptist was for some time the official organ of the Convention.

The Afro-American Mission Herald was the first paper to advance and nurture the foreign mission agenda of the National Baptist Convention of the United States of America.
The Convention was created by African American Baptists in Antebellum America with a strong desire to connect to each other on a national and global scale. Previous conventions, in free-states mostly, were tethered to white associations. As emancipation neared, so, too, did the need for religious independence. Although efforts to establish such a national organization date back as far as the 1840s, regional interests stalled such efforts. Southern blacks seemed especially resistant to a national canon, choosing the comfortable isolation of state unions instead. This regionalism resulted in divergent organizations, three of which became most prominent; the Southern Baptist Convention, American National Baptists Convention formed by Kentuckian Rev. William Simmons, and the National Baptist Convention. By 1895 these three organizations had merged to make The National Baptist Convention USA, Inc. as it exists today and remains the oldest African American religious convention in the U.S. What made this convention work where others had failed was due, in part, to its organizational structure. Divided into three primary boards - Foreign Missions, Home Missions, and Education - the consolidated conventions oversaw one board each.
It was from the Foreign Mission Board that former Mississippi slave Dr. Lewis Garnett Jordan, a minister and the Convention's first historian, left his mark. From Convention headquarters at the Colored Baptist Church of Louisville, Dr. Jordan formed the bi-monthly Afro-American Mission Herald. Its primary objective was to serve and promote The Conventions foreign mission interests that, though worldwide, were concentrated in west and southern Africa. It was a duty that Jordan vigorously upheld through his editorials and content selection, making the paper a "progressive vessel" for the masses. In his book Up the Ladder in Foreign Missions, Dr. Jordan sounds the papers merit "because no history of missions records impartially and fully the deeds of Negroes who have gone to heathen lands and delivered, amid persecution and thrilling circumstances, the Story of the Cross."
The Afro-American Mission Herald was instrumental in the success of the foreign missions and did so, in large part, by keeping African American missionaries connected to each other and home. Eleven years after it was formed in Louisville, the paper moved to Philadelphia. Today, it is still in print as the Mission Herald. The original hard copies of the Afro-American Mission Herald from which the digital images were derived were lent to the University of Kentucky Libraries by the Congregational Library in Boston, MA. Prior to microfilming each issue was cleaned and mended by the UK Libraries Conservation Lab.
